GuideStep by step

Work through it, one row at a time.

Some lists are for working through rather than reading: a gym session, a weekly look at your balances, a round of the garden. Step by step puts one row in front of you at a time, saves it the moment you finish, and keeps your place if you stop.

The idea

One thing on screen, then the next

A record is usually something you read. Step by step is for the times you go through it.

It takes the rows of a living record and shows them one at a time, full screen on a phone, with large buttons that are easy to hit with a thumb. You answer or log the one in front of you, move on, and what you entered lands in the right record without typing a word into chat. It helps most when your hands are busy or your attention is elsewhere: between sets, in the kitchen, walking round the garden with a hose.

A pass takes one of two shapes, and the record’s own page tells you which:

  • Working from a plan. The record is the plan, and each row you finish writes a new row somewhere else. A training programme stays as written while every lift you finish goes into a log with the sets you actually did. The page says “Answers go to …, one row per step”, and that the plan is not changed.
  • Reviewing the rows themselves. Your answers are written back onto each row: this month’s balance against each loan, a tick against each item on a packing list. The page says “Answers are written back onto each row”.
Starting

Press Start

  1. 1

    From a board

A record set up for Step by step usually has its own panel on a dashboard: a title, how many are left to do, and a Start button. When the record is split into groups, such as the days of a programme, the panel names the one that comes next, the group after the one you last finished, so you can rotate through them without keeping count. Tap the name to choose another.

  2. 2

    From the record itself

Open the record from your vault and a Step by step button sits beside its views, with the number of rows to go through. Press it to see the group, the rows the pass will cover and where the answers will go, with a Start button underneath; press it again to return to the view you were on.

  3. 3

    By asking

Chat is where a pass is set up and changed rather than started: ask for one on a record you keep, or for a change to what each step asks for, and the agent sorts out the settings and the Start button. More on that below.

If a record’s conditions leave nothing to do today, such as every plant marked lost or nothing due yet, the panel says “Nothing to go through right now” rather than asking you to add rows.

Going through

What a pass looks like

Each step shows its name, a Planned line where there is a plan, and Last time where there is something earlier to compare with. Below sit the things it asks for: a number you nudge up or down, a choice, a tick or a note. Where a step repeats, as sets do, each one is ticked as you finish it (“Set 2 done”), and you can change the weight or the reps for that set alone, or Add a set.

  • Saved as you go. The main button reads “Done and next”, or “Done and finish” on the last step. Each step is saved the moment you move past it, so a session cut short still leaves everything you did on the record. Going back to an earlier step and finishing it again updates the row it already wrote, with no duplicate.
  • Skipping. Skip moves on without saving. Come back to a skipped step and it offers to take your answer now, or Keep skipped. If you have already entered something, the button reads Move on and saves what is there.
  • The summary. The last step leads to a short summary: what changed from the plan, what was skipped (each with Do it now), and what was done. Finish closes the pass.
  • On a computer. The steps are listed beside the one you are on, and the keyboard works when you are not typing in a field: Enter to finish a step, S to skip, the left arrow to go back, and the up and down arrows to nudge a number.
Stopping part-way

Leave, and pick it up later

Leave takes you back to where you were, and the pass waits. While it is open, a small card sits just above where you type in chat, naming the pass, how far you got and what comes next, with Resume. Reopening it from the board or the card puts you on the next step with a note: “Picked up where you left off.”

To stop for good, open the card’s menu and choose End it here. What you did stays saved, and the steps left are marked not done. What counts as done today is read from what was actually saved, so a lift logged from chat, or a step finished on your phone, shows on the board on every device. Tomorrow starts a fresh pass, and a plan with groups moves on to the next one.

No signal

Keep going in the basement gym

If the connection drops mid-pass, carry on. Each finished step is kept on the device, with a band saying so (“No signal. … is kept on this device and saves when the signal returns.”), and is sent by itself as soon as the connection comes back, with no tap needed. Sending it again never adds a second row. If a save is refused for a reason that waiting will not fix, the band says why and offers Try again.

Kept steps belong to the account and the space they were made in. They are sent only while that account is signed in, so sign back in on the same device and they go.

Kits that use it

Ready-made passes

Many Kits arrive with a pass already set up and a panel on their board, so the first one is a tap away once the record holds something. A few, with the panel each one puts on its board:

It is the same view in every one of them. The Kit only decides which record it walks and what each step asks for.

Your own record

Set one up on anything you keep

Step by step works on any record, including one you started yourself. Describe how you want to go through it, and the agent sets the record up for it, with each step either written back onto its row or logged somewhere else, and puts a panel with a Start button on a board.

Say this

I want to go through my packing list one item at a time and tick each one off.

Sets the list up so each tick is written back onto its row, and adds a panel with a Start button to a board.

Say this

When I work through my weekly plan, log each session I finish to a separate training log.

The plan stays as written; each finished session becomes a row in the log.

Say this

Ask me for a note on each one as well.

Adds a note to what every step asks for, from the next pass on.

If a record’s settings stop fitting it, say after a column is renamed, the pass will not start and says so instead: “This can’t be gone through step by step yet.” Ask in chat and the settings are put right.

Hands busy, record kept

Press Start, do the thing, and the record keeps up.

One row on screen, saved the moment you finish it, with your place kept if you stop and your steps kept on the device when the signal goes.

Common questions

Q Does going through a plan change the plan?

No. When the answers go to another record, the plan is left exactly as written, and the record’s page says so before you start. Only a review writes back onto the rows you are going through.

Q What if I log something in chat as well?

Both land in the same place. A lift you log in chat counts as done in the pass, and finishing it again in the pass updates that row rather than adding a second.

Q Can I start a pass from chat?

Chat sets a pass up and changes it; you start it from the board or from the record’s page. Once a pass is open, the card above the chat box takes you straight back with Resume.

Q What happens to steps I finished with no signal?

They are kept on the device and sent by themselves when the connection returns. If you end the pass first, the card in chat still shows how many are waiting to save.
